In A Thousand Splendid Suns, Laila’s family belongs to the ethnic group the Tajik whereas her neighbor Tariq belongs to the majority group of the Pashtuns. In the story, the two families always got along despite the long history of animosity between the two ethnic groups. An Afghani taxi driver said “the story of our country (Afghanistan), one invader after another…Macedonians, Sassanians, Arabs. Mongols. Now the Soviets.” (pg 132) This is ironic because even though Afghanistan is constantly invaded, their biggest threat is themselves.
